Architectural Education In Sri Lanka At The University Level
Architectural Education has been through quick alterations over the last 40 years. Moving the first program of study from the Institute of Practical Technology, Katubedda, to the University of Colombo in 1969 and improvement it to a university level program at the Faculty of Natural Sciences were the first major variations it faced. With restructuring of the university System in 1972, the program reverted to its place of origins at Katubedda, which by that time had been heightened to a Campus of the University of Sri Lanka, and was combined as a distinct department of study under the Faculty of Engineering. In 1978, the University System was updated and as a result the Katubedda campus attained autonomous reputation and became the University of Moratuwa. Afterwards, in 1979, the Department of Architecture was segregated from the Faculty of Engineering, and a new Faculty of Architecture was formed by creating two added departments viz, the Department of Town and Country Planning and the Department of Building Economics.
Architectural Education at Other Tertiary Level Institutions
Throughout the mid 1980s, 25 years after creating architectural education at the tertiary level, the Council of the institution noted that formal informative facilities were not sufficient to fulfill the requirements of the country. The Council of the SLIA at that time was of the see that there persisted a need for substitute educational opportunities to match the growing need for well-trained architects, in the context for rapid changes taking place in the built atmosphere of Sri Lanka. However the SLIA campaigned for the organization of renewable formal coaching facilities in architecture, nothing materialized. Consequently, the university (SLIA) itself had to stage in and determine a Lecture Program in 1986.
The City School of Architecture (CSA) with a historical past of 25 years and a student populace of nearly 2 hundred, presents an alternative career in architecture that acknowledges that Architectural Education is a wide-ranging based teaching and learning procedure, where a major percentage of the teaching and learning factors lie grounded in the authentic world of practice.
